The problem with “traditional” HMIs

Many operator screens are built to look impressive: bright colours, 3D pipes, animated equipment and a splash of red or green everywhere. The trouble is that when everything competes for attention, nothing stands out — and in an abnormal situation the operator has to hunt for the one value that matters. High-performance HMI (HP-HMI) design fixes this by using colour and motion sparingly, so that a problem is the only thing that draws the eye.

Core principles of high-performance HMI

  • Muted, low-contrast backgrounds — grey process graphics, with bright colour reserved only for alarms and abnormal states.
  • Analogue-style indicators — trends, moving bars and gauges that show whether a value is drifting, not just its current number.
  • Information hierarchy — Level 1 overview screens for situational awareness, drilling down to detail only when needed.
  • Consistency — the same shape, position and behaviour mean the same thing on every screen.

Alarm rationalisation matters as much as graphics

A beautiful screen still fails if operators face an “alarm flood” during an upset. Rationalising alarms — removing nuisance and duplicate alarms, prioritising the rest — is part of good HMI practice and closely tied to SCADA and control-room design.
