Many operator screens are built to look impressive: bright colours, 3D pipes, animated equipment and a splash of red or green everywhere. The trouble is that when everything competes for attention, nothing stands out — and in an abnormal situation the operator has to hunt for the one value that matters. High-performance HMI (HP-HMI) design fixes this by using colour and motion sparingly, so that a problem is the only thing that draws the eye.
A beautiful screen still fails if operators face an “alarm flood” during an upset. Rationalising alarms — removing nuisance and duplicate alarms, prioritising the rest — is part of good HMI practice and closely tied to SCADA and control-room design.
You do not have to replace your control system to benefit. Many plants adopt HP-HMI principles gradually — starting with the most safety-critical screens, standardising the colour palette, and rationalising the worst alarms first.
