Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is a single percentage that tells you how much of your fully productive capacity you are actually achieving. A machine can look busy and still hide large losses; OEE makes those losses visible. It is calculated by multiplying three factors:
OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality
Because the three multiply, a plant at 90% on each factor scores only about 73% OEE — which is why small losses in each area add up fast.
OEE maps neatly onto the classic “six big losses”: breakdowns and setup/adjustment (availability); idling/minor stops and reduced speed (performance); and startup rejects and production rejects (quality). Naming the loss is the first step to removing it.
Manual OEE from spreadsheets is slow and often wrong. The reliable approach is to pull the data straight from the machines — run states from the PLC, counts from sensors, downtime reasons from the SCADA layer.
