OEE Explained: Turning Machine Data into Productivity

What is OEE?

Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is a single percentage that tells you how much of your fully productive capacity you are actually achieving. A machine can look busy and still hide large losses; OEE makes those losses visible. It is calculated by multiplying three factors:

OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality

The three factors

  • Availability — is the machine running when it is scheduled to? Losses here are breakdowns and changeovers.
  • Performance — is it running at its designed speed? Losses here are minor stops and slow cycles.
  • Quality — how much of the output is good first time? Losses here are scrap and rework.

Because the three multiply, a plant at 90% on each factor scores only about 73% OEE — which is why small losses in each area add up fast.

The six big losses

OEE maps neatly onto the classic “six big losses”: breakdowns and setup/adjustment (availability); idling/minor stops and reduced speed (performance); and startup rejects and production rejects (quality). Naming the loss is the first step to removing it.

Measuring it accurately

Manual OEE from spreadsheets is slow and often wrong. The reliable approach is to pull the data straight from the machines — run states from the PLC, counts from sensors, downtime reasons from the SCADA layer. From measurement to improvement

World-class OEE is often quoted around 85%, but the real value is not the benchmark — it is the trend and the reasons behind it. Once you can see why a line loses time, you can target the biggest loss first, and connect it to predictive maintenance to stop breakdowns before they happen.
