Modern automation runs on the network. As plants connected more devices — drives, sensors, HMIs, robots and higher-level systems — traditional fieldbuses gave way to industrial Ethernet, which offers far higher bandwidth and easy integration with the rest of the business. But office Ethernet and industrial Ethernet are not the same: industrial versions add determinism, meaning data arrives predictably and on time, which matters when a late signal can crash a machine.
Most real plants are a mix. The job of a good integrator is to make them coexist cleanly and talk to your SCADA and control systems.
Industrial networks tend to be “installed and forgotten” — until intermittent faults start stopping production and nobody can find the cause. Small problems build silently: rising packet errors, jitter, dropped frames, marginal cabling and duplicate addresses. By the time they cause a visible stoppage, diagnosis is slow and expensive.
