Industrial Robots vs Cobots: Choosing the Right Automation

Two tools for two different jobs

“Robot” and “cobot” are often used interchangeably, but they are built for different situations. Traditional industrial robots are fast, powerful and precise — and, because of that power, they usually work behind guarding. Collaborative robots (cobots) are designed to share space with people, trading some speed and payload for built-in safety and flexibility.

Traditional industrial robots

Six-axis and SCARA robots dominate high-volume work: welding, high-speed pick-and-place, palletising heavy loads and press tending. They offer high payloads, long reach and fast cycle times, but they need fencing, light curtains or area scanners because a collision could seriously injure an operator.

What makes a cobot different

  • Force and speed limiting — the robot slows or stops on contact.
  • Rounded, lightweight design — less energy in a collision.
  • Easy hand-guiding — staff can teach positions by physically moving the arm.
  • Fast redeployment — a cobot can move between tasks as demand changes.

This makes cobots ideal for machine tending, assembly, quality inspection, light palletising and lab automation — especially in high-mix, lower-volume plants.

Safety is still an engineering decision

A common misconception is that a cobot is “automatically safe.” In reality, safety depends on the application: a cobot carrying a sharp tool or a hot part can still be hazardous. Standards such as ISO 10218 and ISO/TS 15066 require a proper risk assessment of the whole cell. How to choose

  1. Volume and cycle time — very high throughput favours a traditional robot.
  2. Space and people — shared workspaces favour cobots.
  3. Flexibility — frequent product changes favour cobots.
  4. Total cost — include guarding, integration and safety validation, not just the robot price.
