“Robot” and “cobot” are often used interchangeably, but they are built for different situations. Traditional industrial robots are fast, powerful and precise — and, because of that power, they usually work behind guarding. Collaborative robots (cobots) are designed to share space with people, trading some speed and payload for built-in safety and flexibility.
Six-axis and SCARA robots dominate high-volume work: welding, high-speed pick-and-place, palletising heavy loads and press tending. They offer high payloads, long reach and fast cycle times, but they need fencing, light curtains or area scanners because a collision could seriously injure an operator.
This makes cobots ideal for machine tending, assembly, quality inspection, light palletising and lab automation — especially in high-mix, lower-volume plants.
A common misconception is that a cobot is “automatically safe.” In reality, safety depends on the application: a cobot carrying a sharp tool or a hot part can still be hazardous. Standards such as ISO 10218 and ISO/TS 15066 require a proper risk assessment of the whole cell.
